An application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) is a semiconductor chip designed for a specific purpose. The benefits of an ASIC are significant – and even required – for the consumer market: very low manufacturing cost when produced in high volume, faster processing and increased efficiency, and greater IP security. Approximately 2 billion devices manufactured every year are candidates for integration of a proprietary 3D chip, generating potentially billions of dollars in revenue. Creation of the ASIC will include coordination with a major chip foundry like TSMC.
